About the initial mass function and He II emission in young starbursts
We demonstrate that it is crucial to account for the evolution of the starburst population in order to derive reliable numbers of O stars from integrated spectra for burst ages t > 2−3 Myr. In these cases the method of Vacca & Conti (1992) and Vacca (1994) systematically underestimates the number of O stars. Therefore the current WR/O number ratios in Wolf–Rayet (WR) galaxies are overestimated....
متن کاملThe Stellar Initial Mass Function
The current status of both the observational evidence and the theory of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is reviewed, with particular attention to the two basic, apparently universal features shown by all observations of nearby stellar systems: (1) a characteristic stellar mass of the order of one solar mass, and (2) a power-law decline of the IMF at large masses similar to the original ...
متن کاملMapping the core mass function to the initial mass function
It has been shown that fragmentation within self-gravitating, turbulent molecular clouds (‘turbulent fragmentation’) can naturally explain the observed properties of protostellar cores, including the core mass function (CMF). Here, we extend recently developed analytic models for turbulent fragmentation to follow the time-dependent hierarchical fragmentation of selfgravitating cores, until they...
متن کاملThe Initial Mass Function and its Variation
The observed distribution of IMF shapes can be understood as statistical sampling from a universal IMF and variations that result from stellar-dynamical processes. However, young star clusters appear to have an IMF biased towards low-mass stars when compared to the Galactic disk IMF, which comprises an average populated by star-formation episodes occurring Gyrs ago. In addition to this tentativ...
متن کاملThe Stellar Initial Mass Function and Beyond
A brief review is given of the basic observed features of the stellar IMF, and also of some of the theoretical ideas and simulations that may help to explain these features. The characteristic stellar mass of order one solar mass may derive from the typical masses of the observed starforming clumps in molecular clouds, and the typical clump mass may in turn be determined mainly by the Jeans mas...
